Definition
The year hands are the section at the top of each year's card built from the digits of that year, and they change every year when the new card is issued.
They are the most visible sign that the card is new. Because the digits change, a year hand that was easy one season may be awkward the next.
At the table
Year hands are the most visible thing on a new card each April, and the most tempting, because the digits are easy to spot in your own rack. They are not automatically easy to build. Read what the line actually asks for around the digits before committing, since a year hand that needs a specific pair is as demanding as any other.
